SWA - Areas of Specialization

Atmospheric physics and environmental sciences are the common themes within SWA's wide range of experience and research. While this diversity within a small company means shared personnel and facilities, several distinct areas of capability can be identified:
Laser Applications - SWA has developed detailed computer simulation models for space-based and airborne lidars. Unique research has been conducted on the topics of atmospheric representation and distribution (particularly clouds and aerosols), and the analysis of both ground-based and airborne Doppler lidar wind data.

Coal Emissions Control - SWA provides customized solutions to fugitive coal dust problems through air quality modeling and monitoring, weather observations and forecasting, coal transport (via rail) studies, chemical testing, and the design of automated dust-control systems.

Meteorological Services - SWA provides a wide range of consulting services for insurance companies, industries, agricultural interests, and private firms. These activities include; customized weather forecasts, data analysis and interpretation, forensic meteorology, and expert testimony. In addition, SWA conducts research and provides services in wind energy, weather modification, atmospheric lidar, hurricanes and tropical meteorology.

Environmental Research - Amongst the broad range of environmental consulting services provided by SWA are air quality monitoring, air pollution source inventories, environmental audits of properties, and both hydrological and hydro-geological assessments.

Information Systems - SWA has been instrumental in the testing and evaluation of the data information systems (e.g., EOSDIS V0) being developed by NASA to support the upcoming MTPE EOS missions. In addition, SWA has also created an on-line tutorial on Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) designed to aid HDF beginners in learning how use the data format language.

Customized Hardware/Software - For the past 15 years, SWA has been developing and deploying surface weather and dust monitoring instrument networks to fit the needs of our clients. To utilize the data recorded by these systems, SWA is constantly developing new software packages to help in the visualization, analysis and manipulation of the large amounts of data collected.
