SWA Coal - Rail Transport Emission Profiling System (RTEPS)

The Rail Transport Emission Profiling System was initially developed to monitor fugitive dust emissions from coal rail cars during transit. RTEPS collects data on the frequency and intensity of dust emissions relative to train speed, wind speed, and coal surface temperature. Additionally, passive collection samplers give an indication of the total coal loss during transit. Use of RTEPS was instrumental in convincing a major East Coast coal mining company that they could gain economically by investing in treating their coal with chemical dust suppressants.

While this instrument carriage was originally designed to monitor emissions from uncovered coal cars, it can be adapted to monitor any moving emission sources.

RTEPS includes:
bulletAn optical dust emissions monitor
bulletPassive sample collectors
bulletInfrared coal surface temperature sensors
bulletInternal coal temperature and moisture sensors
bulletVideo and photographic cameras
bulletWeather station including an anemometer and rain gauge
