Since the mid-1980s, SWA's Coal Emissions Control (CEC) Division has been providing innovative, customized solutions to fugitive coal dust problems for ground storage facilities and railroads. We emphasize site-specific and cost-effective approaches that avoid costly "over-solutions." Our services include:

bulletDesign and operation of fugitive dust control systems and programs
bulletAir permitting for new and expanding coal handling facilities
bulletAir quality modeling and monitoring
bulletParticulate source inventorying
bulletWeather observation and forecasting support for activities with high fugitive dusting potential
bulletStorm run-off collection and settling pond modeling/design
bulletThird-party testing of chemical products used in coal dust suppression for storage piles and rail transport
bulletPublic relations on behalf of clients with fugitive dust challenges

SWA has built a reputation for innovative design and deployment of new and cost-effective technologies. Here is a selected list of these systems and services:

bulletRail Transport Emission Profiling System (RTEPS)
bulletCoal Car Load Profiling System (CCLPS)
bulletPortable LAser for Coal Emission Mapping (PLACEM)
bulletK-System
bulletEvaluation of Chemical Dust Suppressants
bulletAutonomous control of wet dust suppression systems for coal storage piles (ProControl)
bulletSeasonally Adjusted Rail Transport Dusting Index (SARTDX)

SWA has broad experience installing and operating meteorological towers, PM-10 and TSP monitors, conducting wind tunnel experiments, air quality modeling and groundwater modeling. In addition, SWA often acts on behalf of our clients as public relations liaison with the press, the general public and with regulatory agencies. Contact the CEC Division for details on these systems and services.
